Ochate is a small town in Burgos in the County of Treviño, which has been abandoned without knowing since when and that acquired a few years ago fame of registering paranormal phenomena of all kinds.

The name of Ochate means according to the researchers, "the door of the spirits". The town is abandoned and in ruins. Only one house remains standing, in addition to the tower of the church of San Miguel.

Ochate is a land of enigmas and mystery. There is a medieval necropolis in the vicinity with tombs carved directly into the rock. The remains of an ancient ceremonial temple, known as the hermitage of Burgondo, are also preserved, from where you can enjoy the views offered by the landscape. But the origins of this hermitage are still a complete mystery today.

So much is the mystery offered by this enigmatic place that has become a place of pilgrimage for lovers of the paranormal. His legends came to light due to a report that was published in the eighties by Mundo Desconocido magazine. The report was based on a photograph that Prudencio Muguruza himself made in 1981 in which he captured the image of a UFO in the vicinity of Ochate.
Although many researchers put the snapshot revealed two months later in doubt, the truth is that the University of Bilbao could not determine if there was fraud in the authenticity of photography. The history of the town has been based more on the "mouth to mouth", that as a result of the report of Muguruza, quickly became popular.

Actual verifiable data relate that this town was uninhabited due to a series of mysterious epidemics in the 19th century, and that is why it has a reputation as a curse. It should be noted that the dates of the epidemics in the town do not coincide with the epidemics of these diseases that hit the rest of the province of Burgos and its neighbor Álava.
Data from the Diputación Provincial de Burgos estimate that the town was abandoned between the 1920s and 1930s in natural circumstances due to the migration of the population to the cities. However, it is true that Ochate was the victim of three plagues. The Cholera, the Typhus or the Smallpox diminished the population and turned burials to the residents who resided in the vicinity.

It was in 1947 when the first lights in the town were observed. The authorities were alerted and could see along with other witnesses as lightning struck the tower of the church, where after a mysterious medallion was found among the debris of the tower. The medallion is currently unaccounted for. There were also disappearances of people in strange circumstances in the vicinity of the town. Even that of the parish priest of the church, priest Antonio Villegas, in the year 1868.
The investigations of Prudencio Muguruza and the later ones carried out by Iker Jiménez, speak of a series of modern events related to the paranormal. Record psychophonies in the latter and it is also said that armored tanks from the military base of Vitoria were wandering for four hours through a thick fog that formed one winter night.
In January of 2007 the book of "Reality and legend of the cursed town" of Antonio Arroyo and Julio corral was published, only work until the moment that deepens seriously in the history and the mysteries of the town. In this book a rigorous list of historical data is presented on the areas that cover from 3000 years before Christ to the present.
It is noteworthy that, based on the data provided, the authors discard that the end of the town was seen to the famous epidemics and show for the first time the real sequence of depopulation.
As for the paranormal facet, the authors bring to light some truly startling unpublished cases such as a real and documented violent murder carried out in one of the houses of the town, and the surprising testimonies of members of the Army who lived strange situations during a series of military maneuvers, or the stories of people who claim to have lived unexplained experiences in the place.
Reality or legend, this story opens a deep debate between whether it really is a town with a cursed past or if, on the contrary, everything is the result of the creation of Prudencio Muguruza. What is evident is that strange events occurred in this Spanish population. But, perhaps it is a lot of legend that surrounds the town and has been used to make a temple of pilgrimage for all lovers of the paranormal ..
